Radio Canada: The Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) annual conference with Anneke Smit

Centre for Cities Director Anneke Smit talks with ‘Matins sans frontières’ on the Centre for Cities team’s participation in the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) annual conference.

The Congress focusses on the practical application of good citybuilding principles including sustainable land use and housing, placemaking, active and public transportation.  The CNU’s location in Cincinnati this year provided participants the opportunity to experience Cincinnati, a “rust belt” city, has been able to accomplish in terms of rejuvenation – through a vision implemented with policy and financial incentives.  The mayor Cincinnati, Aftab Pureval, reflected that leaders in cities that have experienced rapid growth consistently say that investments in active and public transportation, and zoning reform to encourage more dense and varied forms of development, are the two things they wish they had done to prepare for the growth.
