The Centre for Cities at the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law is proud to announce the launch of the 2025–2026 Speaker Series, Belonging in the City: Repair, Resistance, and Reimagination. This year’s series brings together activists, scholars, and community leaders to explore what it means to create cities rooted in care, justice, and imagination.
Through thoughtful discussion and collaboration, each event in the series invites both students and members of the Windsor community to reflect on how urban spaces can be repaired, resisted, and reimagined to foster true belonging.
The series will open with a talk by Dr. Carly Ziter, Associate Professor at Concordia University, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Alan Wildeman Centre for Creative Arts (Room FW107).
This talk will discuss urban nature-based solutions in the Canadian context. In cities across Canada there is a growing focus on the management, restoration, and protection of nature as an important way to address societal challenges while providing benefits for both people and biodiversity. Particular focus will be given to the importance of collaborating across sectors (municipal and higher levels of government, Indigenous nations, community, academia), as well as the powerful role of local citizens and communities in making change – starting in your own backyard.
Dr. Ziter is an internationally recognized urban ecologist and member of Concordia’s Next Generation Cities Institute. Her research examines how urban nature contributes to safer, healthier, and more resilient cities in a rapidly changing world. Working in partnership with landowners, community groups, and all levels of government, Dr. Ziter’s lab blends environmental science, social-ecological systems research, and community engagement to advance nature-based solutions. She currently serves as the regional lead for the Canada–U.S. Chapter of the Natura Global Roadmap for Nature-Based Solutions and is a lead author on the North American Climate Change and Biodiversity Assessment.
