New Windsor Law Centre for Cities Research Assistant

(27 July 2020) The Windsor Law Centre for Cities is pleased to introduce Zara Mercer who is working with Prof. Gemma Smyth on the project “Access Without Fear: Inclusive Municipal Policies & Practices.” Zara is entering her final year as a JD student at Windsor Law.

During her time at Windsor Law, Zara has worked on a social action research project exploring “access without fear” municipal policies and their potential for the city of Windsor, Ontario. She is a co-author on a pending legal publication on this subject. This project ignited her passion for immigration, municipal and administrative law and provided an impactful, policy-minded application of her social science research background. Understanding the direct bearings of policy on lived experiences and how they can be leveraged and mobilized through activism has been the most rewarding aspect of her legal education.

Zara completed a BA in Psychology from Ryerson University and has a research background in qualitative, critical, feminist psychology. She has co-authored two peer-reviewed research papers with the SHiFT Lab at Ryerson University and has presented her work at national and international conferences. She recently completed an externship placement at the Health Justice Program, a medical-legal partnership within St Michael’s Hospital, and is continuing an immigration law clinic position at Legal Assistance of Windsor. She is the Co-President of Women and the Law and Vice-President of External Outreach for OUTlaws. Welcome Zara!
